Healthy Eating For Life

Sustain your healthy weight with the Optimal Health 3&3 Plan™. This nutritionally balanced plan is easy to follow and consists of 3 balanced meals and 3 Optimal Health™ products each day. It also allows you to integrate additional foods in the right portion sizes for variety and flexibility. As referenced in Dr. A's Habits of Health and as part of a healthy lifestyle, you should eat small meals every 3 hours, and this plan reinforces that particular habit of health!

3 Optimal Health Fuelings & 3 Balanced Meals

3 Easy Steps

1. Calculate your Total Energy Expenditure (TEE), which is the number of calories you burn each day.
See below to use our easy TEE Calculator.
The Optimal Health 3&3 Plan™ takes a commonsense approach to sustaining a healthy weight based on the idea of balancing your food intake with the calories you burn. For a detailed explanation see Chapter 12 of Dr. A's Habits of Health, "Healthy Eating for Life: Your Transition to Permanent Health."

2. Choose your meal plan based on your TEE. Our Registered Dietitians have developed a variety of meal plans ranging from 1,200 - 2,500 calories. Remember your meal plan will consist of 3 balanced meals and 3 Optimal Health products on most calorie plans.

3. Familiarize yourself with your plan's food groups, which include a combination of fruits, dairy, starches, proteins, fats and vegetables. To add variety, select foods from the Healthy Exchange Options as substitutions. You can also have 1 Free Choice each day. All of the foods listed in the Healthy Exchange Options are approximately 100 calories and can also be used as a Free Choice. For more information read Chapter 10 of Dr. A's Habits of Health, "Planning Your Fueling Breaks" on page 119

Note: you may also have an alcoholic beverage or sweet treat as a Free Choice, but we recommend using those items sparingly. Check in with your Health Coach if you have any questions about the 3&3 Optimal Health Plan™. Also, our Flavors of Home™ Beef Stew or Chicken Cacciatore is an easy way to substitute 3-4oz of protein, 1 starch, and 2 fats. Flavors of Home™ Turkey & Meatballs can substitute 3-4oz of protein, ½ starch, and 2 fats. Check in with your Health Coach if you have any questions about the 3&3 Optimal Health Plan™.

Total Energy Expenditure (TEE) Equals Calories Eaten

To sustain an optimal weight, your TEE and the calories you take in each day should be the same amount. We make it easy to calculate your TEE with our TEE Calculator, which is based upon a formula that multiplies your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and your Physical Activity Level (PAL). Simply enter your healthy weight, height, age and activity level, and it will tell you how many calories you need to consume a day to sustain your healthy weight. Once calculated, we recommend you round down if needed to the closest meal plan. For example, if your TEE is 1,855 calories, start with the 1,800 calorie Optimal Health Meal Plan. If you feel hungry or continue to lose weight, increase your calorie intake to 1,900 calories.
